Since 2009, this exclusive programme has been continually developed and tested by American-Singaporean John Cunningham (J.C.), educated in the USA and New Zealand. It started as an exclusive curriculum for Singapore’s most prestigious kindergarten. The STELLAR English Preparatory Classes are now offered to children all across Asia.

The STELLAR English Preparatory Classes: Learning Theme 1 – Save My Earth includes 4 storybooks on the topic of environment, pollution and the Three R’s (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle), that J.C. sourced internationally. In this Learning Theme, children can acquire STELLAR skills in English literacy and communication through educational songs, interactive learning activities, vocabulary cards, storybook review cards, narrations, and built-in assessment exercises.   

Learning Theme 1Save My Earth includes these four storybooks:

     1) What Does It Mean To Be Green? by Rana Di Orio and Chris Blair

     2) Somebody Swallowed Stanley by Sarah Roberts and Hannah Peck

     3) Why Is Coco Orange? by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

     4) Go Easy On Energy by Lisa Bullard and Wes Thomas

Learning Theme 1 – Save My Earth is the first Learning Theme of our advanced programme. 

We will offer 3 more Learning Themes with the following topics: Occupations, Food & Nutrition, and Sea Creatures.

Learning Objectives

  • Learning Theme Objectives: STELLAR English Preparatory Classes focus on preparing children

– to become STELLAR Speakers, STELLAR Readers, STELLAR Listeners with STELLAR Behaviour  

– to develop English language skills by practicing reading tones, reading speeds, and vocabulary use

– to improve expressive ability through educational songs, interactive learning activities, vocabulary cards, storybook review cards, narrations, and built-in assessment exercises

– to elevate their reading and verbal fluency for life-long academic success.

  • By the end of this Learning Theme, children will be STELLAR Storytellers of four storybooks on the topic of environment and conservation! Your child will be able to Think Smart, Act Smart, and Speak Smart. Children will be able to answer open-ended questions about the storybooks, and confidently share their opinions on what they can do to Save My Earth and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Pre-Requisite

This theme is one of 4 different learning themes in this curriculum targeted for ages 5 and above

 

For optimal learning results, a child’s Scholastic Reading Level* should be at Level D or above.

Course Delivery

The STELLAR English Preparatory Classes: Learning Theme 1 – Save My Earth offers six learning hours in total.

Four storybooks with various educational songs and digitized activities are featured in four 90-minute lessons.
Each lesson is divided into two 45-minute learning sessions for optimal learning results.  

 

The four storybooks include:

1) What Does It Mean To Be Green? by Rana Di Orio and Chris Blair

2) Somebody Swallowed Stanley by Sarah Roberts and Hannah Peck

3) Why Is Coco Orange? by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

4) Go Easy On Energy by Lisa Bullard and Wes Thomas

At the beginning of each Learning Theme, we will provide a Theme Letter to introduce the four storybooks and the authors/illustrators.

At the end of each storybook, a completion note will be provided with storybook review cards, key song lyrics, and notes about the lesson content that parents can choose to discuss with their child. For more in-depth assessment of each child’s individual learning progress, parents can review the assessment exercises with their child at the end of every lesson. 

Course Outline

4 high-quality 90-minute lessons are based on 4 storybooks’ educational songs, interactive learning activities, vocabulary cards, storybook review cards, narrations, and built-in assessment exercises. These materials are provided for children to successfully complete the STELLAR English Preparatory Classes: Learning Theme 1 – Save My Earth. 

 

Each full lesson is divided into two 45-minute learning sessions that follow this learning pattern:

 

  • Learning Session 1

– Greeting and Setting Learning Expectations

– Welcoming Children with the Hello Song & Introducing the Learning Theme

– Pre-reading Storybook Activity & Introducing the Storybook

– Reading half of the Storybook & Doing a Theme-related Song 

– Reviewing Vocabulary Cards & Wrapping-up Learning Session 1 with another Theme-related Song

 

  • Learning Session 2:

– Welcoming Children to Learning Session 2 with the Hello Song and an Interactive Activity

– Re-introducing the Learning Theme & Doing a Theme-related Song Activity

– Continuing the reading the Storybook & Doing a Theme-related Song Activity

– Assessment Exercises (using a Questions Game, Vocabulary Cards, Storybook Review Cards, and an optional Recording Activity)

– Wrapping-up and Goodbye & Sharing the Copyright Information.

Certification

Upon completion of all four books in this Learning Theme, a Completion Certificate will be awarded. 

After completing all four learning themes, the Singapore ACTs of Life’s Graduation Certificate is issued.
